Dayton played a pivotal role in the development of funk, a musical fusion of jazz, rhythm and blues and rock, during the 1970s. A large number of commercially successful funk bands originated in Dayton during this time. It was a period in which African Americans comprised over one-third of a population that exceeded 200,000.
